NIH-funded research expands evaluation of Oral Biolife’s technology into a significant new indication involving bone loss around dental implants

BETHLEHEM, PA, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Oral Biolife (OBL), a biotechnology company developing a first-in-class piezoelectric regenerative platform designed to stimulate new bone formation, today announced that it has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), to investigate its technology as a potential non-surgical treatment approach for peri-implantitis.

The NIH award represents an important external validation of Oral Biolife’s expanding regenerative platform and supports the evaluation of its technology beyond periodontal bone regeneration into an additional dental indication characterized by progressive bone loss.

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding dental implants that can result in progressive loss of supporting bone and, ultimately, implant failure. Current treatment can require surgical intervention, creating a significant need for effective approaches capable of addressing both the disease and associated bone loss with less invasive treatment.

The study will be led by Ronaldo Santana, DMD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology at Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, who will serve as Principal Investigator.

The NIH-funded peri-implantitis program provides an opportunity to evaluate whether this regenerative mechanism can address another important area of unmet need in dentistry and further demonstrate the potential applicability of Oral Biolife’s technology across multiple bone-regeneration indications.
