Orion today announced a significant expansion of Advisor Trading, giving individual advisors a purpose-built version of Orion’s trading and rebalancing technology inside their daily workflow, while firms maintain granular oversight and control.

“Firms have been asking us for a clear path to let their advisors trade directly, without giving up oversight or standing up a separate system,” said Trent Mumma, Chief Product Officer, Orion. “This is the same trading and rebalancing engine our largest firms run every day, tailored to a workflow built for how advisors actually work — full firm-grade power, shaped to the advisor’s day.”

As firms grow and consolidate, more of them are looking to give advisors direct trading capability by managing and implementing their investor client portfolios while preserving firm-level standards. Advisor Trading answers that with a flexible user-permissioning system that lets firms grant specific features — or portions of features — to individual advisors, with strong guardrails and clear delineation of ownership.

Advisor Trading workflows are linked to Portfolio View, placing trading alongside the AI-powered capabilities advisors already use every day. Later this year, Orion plans to add an AI Trading Assistant that uses natural language to help advisors manage trading preferences, review the prior day’s trades for anomalies and unexecuted orders, and support pre- and post-trade review.

Advisor Trading gives firms and advisors:

  • Full trading power, shaped for advisor needs: the same best-in-class rebalancing and trading engine used to execute at massive scale, presented in a focused workflow.

  • Works across custodians: Advisor Trading works as a central source across all custodians Orion supports.

  • Flexible, firm-controlled permissions: granular, feature-level controls let firms decide exactly what each advisor can access, with strong guardrails and clear ownership.

  • Built for consolidation: ideal for firms acquiring RIAs whose advisors trade on their own, without forcing them onto a centralized trade desk.

  • Tax-smart transitions: as firms consolidate or onboard new accounts, Orion manages the tax impact of moving portfolios into models with tax-loss harvesting, wash-sale prevention, and capital-gains budgeting so advisors transition clients without unnecessary tax drag.

  • Fractional share trading: with custodians that offer fractional shares, Orion has the technology to support it, letting advisors implement client models to the dollar rather than rounding to whole shares, reducing cash drag and sharpening precision.

Built on the trading and rebalancing technology 85% of Orion’s largest clients already rely on, Orion Trading is proven, enterprise-grade infrastructure built to handle their volume dependably, every trading day. The extension of that foundation to the advisor gives them direct control over how their clients’ portfolios are traded rather than routing every request through a central desk. As more advisors create and review trades, the process scales with them incorporating advisor-directed workflows while the home office retains control and system access on the advisor level.
